ETFE vs glass: which roof is right for your scheme?

Glass is the default for a reason — it's familiar, precise, and specifiers know how it behaves. But on large spans, curved geometries and daylight-hungry buildings, ETFE quietly outperforms it on weight, cost, thermal performance and buildability.

ETFE roofs weigh a small fraction of an equivalent glass roof. That single fact cascades through the entire structure: smaller steel sections, smaller foundations, faster installation, lower embodied carbon. On a large atrium, the structural savings alone can pay for a meaningful part of the ETFE package.

Glass still wins where you need acoustic mass, security glazing, or a vertical façade at eye level. The honest answer is often hybrid — ETFE overhead, glass at the perimeter — and the decision needs to be made at concept stage, not after the structural grid is frozen.
