- Why ETFE
- Daylight and weather cover on a load-constrained structure
The challenge
Leeds is one of the busiest stations outside London, built over a viaduct and hemmed in on all sides. The concourse needed weather cover and daylight without heavy new structure landing on constrained foundations.
The ETFE solution
A translucent ETFE roof covers the concourse and passenger areas. Because the system is so light, the supporting steel could stay modest and work with what the existing structure could take.
The result
Passengers move through a sheltered space that still feels open to the sky, with even daylight rather than the glare-and-shadow pattern of a part-glazed roof.
